Our Story
Why the name 1836?
“Our Texas Legacy ”
1836 is the year Texas became its own country. Around that time, the Washburn family settled in Bells. Samual Joseph Washburn arrived with a Dugan man and started their families. These families still live and raise their families here in Bells.
When the government issued land grants to original settlers, the Washburn family was issued about 1,200 acres here in Bells. Joseph and Nickie now live and raise children on a portion of that property. The family has very deep here in Bells.
After attending Bells ISD, Joseph attended Oklahoma State University (Go Pokes!) for Culinary Arts. Since graduating in 2001, he has been perfecting his craft. He has worked under some of the most renowned chefs in the country, catered for some of the most prominent people in the state, and opened numerous restaurants for other owners. Joseph’s passion is creating delicious, mouthwatering menu items that throw a curveball at your run-of-the-meal everyday café experience.
Nickie has worked in all aspects of the restaurant business a server, a bartender, and as manager. The world of corporate restaurants is where she gained her knowledge, and now she brings that experience to their café.
Joseph and Nickie Washburn have been in the restaurant business for 20+ years. This café is their dream! They’ve built this café from the ground up and have only scratched the surface on the plans for this adventure. So y’all come along for the ride. We promise it’ll be tasty!
